Art as a Humanitarian Bridge in Times of War
A Lamasat Initiative Providing Direct, Safe, and Sustainable Support to Sudanese Visual Artists Aff
On 13 June 2023, amid the early stages of the war in Sudan, Lamasat launched an urgent artistic and humanitarian initiative to support Sudanese visual artists, specifically those residing in Khartoum, who were directly affected by the conflict.
As artists inside Sudan faced severe restrictions, loss of income, and isolation from artistic platforms, Lamasat intervened by creating an alternative model of support. A collective exhibition was organized featuring artworks by a large number of Sudanese visual artists based in Khartoum. Their works were professionally printed outside Sudan and exhibited on their behalf.
The initiative was conceived not only as a cultural response, but as a practical support mechanism. All artworks were made available for sale, and the proceeds were collected and transferred to the artists inside Sudan through United Nations channels, ensuring that financial assistance reached them safely despite the ongoing crisis.
The exhibition ran for two days and achieved strong engagement and commercial success. More importantly, it demonstrated how art can function as a tool for solidarity, resilience, and direct support in times of conflict.
Through this initiative, Lamasat reaffirmed its commitment to standing with artists during moments of crisis—using art as a means of dignity, continuity, and human connection even in the most challenging circumstances.
